St. Gregorios Malankara
Orthodox Syrian Church Church Building Project
"Know therefore that the LORD your
God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant
of love to a thousand generations of those who love him
and keep his commands."
Deuteronomy 7:9
St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Syrian
Church is a parish of the American Diocese of the
Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. The Church
was founded by St. Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus
Christ in A.D. 52. The parish was established on April
26, 1978, in Evanston, Illinois. In 1984 the Church
moved to its present location in Oak Park, Illinois.
Since its founding in 1978, the Church
has increased both its scope and scale of missionary
activities and its membership. In the past 20 years,
since the Church moved to Oak Park, we have expanded our
facilities once to accommodate the growing membership.
Currently, we have run out of space at our existing
location in Oak Park to extend the Church any further.
It is imperative that the Church move to a new location
to support its growing membership and its missionary
activities.
We have embarked on a multi-phase,
multi-year project to build a larger facility that will
accommodate the needs of the Church. Phase 1 of the
project is to identify an appropriate piece of property.
Phase 2 will focus on architectural drawings and
collection of funds to construct the new Church. The
construction of the Church building will be done in
Phase 3. The objective of this fund raising effort is
to raise the funds to help the Church execute on its
transition plan.
We are
actively looking to acquire four to five acres of land
in the close proximity of an expressway. The four to
five acres of land will support a Church building that
will seat about 700 members, accommodate parking for
about 200 cars and house a parsonage building. We intend
to acquire the land by the end of 2005.
In phase 2,
the Church plans to put together a fund raising strategy
to raise funds for the construction of the church
building. The fund raising strategy will include various
fund raising programs aimed at both the membership and
the external community. We plan to engage an
architectural firm to render architectural designs for
the new building in Phase 2.
Phase 3
consists of the actual construction of the Church, the
parking lot and the parsonage building. We estimate this
phase to last about an year.
We cannot
accomplish this without the active support of the
community and well wishers. We invite you to partner
with us as we start this exciting journey.
